Child sex offenders could face life behind bars under new laws to be introduced to New South Wales parliament this week.

The maximum penalty for sexual intercourse with a child under 10 would be raised from 25 years to life in jail.

“We want to send a message in the strongest possible terms,” the attorney general, Gabrielle Upton, said in a statement on Sunday.

The laws would also add 13 child sex offences to the non-parole period scheme, meaning more jail time for offenders, the government says.

Victims would also be able to avoid the stress of the courtroom by pre-recording cross examination evidence.
